Ah, and *here* is where I started to really *get* how to draw birds, today. Even shaded in a sky for this guy here, wings poised to spring into the air.
Thanks! I'm getting to the point where I'm starting to see that a really fun, effective way to draw is with shading by itself almost, instead of trying to get everything with just 'lines' - it's a totally new way for me to think about things, I'm having a ton of fun with it.
hey, you know what's a really fun way to practice working with tones alone? you can cover the whole paper in a medium tone with vine charcoal, and then use compressed charcoal to make the darker tones, and use an eraser to pull out lighter areas.. or you can use white chalk, but that's not as much fun as relying on the eraser and plus if the charcoal you're using is stubby enough, it'll deter you from the temptation to use lines, or at least from using finer lines
Ah, interesting! I've actually done something a bit similar - the whole paper in medium tone with vine charcoal, but instead of lights with rubber erasor and darks with compressed charcoal, the drawing was entirely lights, with different firmnesses of erasor's - sort of like an inverted black/white thing, I've gotta try your idea too, maybe I'll use something like a red conte instead of black charcoal for effect... Hmm... hmm...

Don't be gone to long, you might miss something.
