Ah, this was neat. Limiting myself to a couple inches and no more than perhaps 20 seconds per frame, this is gesture drawing. Capturing the essence of the gesture, of the movement, rather than any particular form. Going for the essence of the thing itself, rather than its apperance. The impression rather than the outline - the masses and planes, the depth, edges, white space, interpenetration of forms.

Very neat.

Conte crayon?

Actually I think this was just regular old black pastel - this is cheap newsprint here, and I had trouble getting the conte to 'work' without tearing the page. Next time I think I might go for some giant charcoal stick, or see how oil pastel works out. That reminds me, I really do need to get better paper.

Oooh, I've had similar troubles mixing conte and newsprint.

Oh man, willow charcoal is my favorite. If only it wasn't so dusty! Two hours breathing that stuff in gives me a bit of a dry throat. Water!

Actually I've found that for me the most fun way to draw is with willow vine charcoal and a... what's it called, little microfiber cloth thing. The cloth is perfect for 'smudging' stuff into tones, way better than fingers or tissues, lasts forever, and is great for sort of 'sculpting' things, if that makes sense. Just lay on a big mush of charcoal, then blend it all over with the microfiber cloth thing, don't have to be excact at all 'cause you're just going to be pushing it around anyway.

I can't really help using my finger it seems, when it comes to any medium. Charcoal, paint, whatever...
I feel like I'm closer to controlling it with my fingers.

Haha I knoooow, but then I get all frustrated with smudging stuff all over. Agreed though, and I much prefer using a fingernail at the moment to a pallet knife for making stuff like tree branches or grass when I'm painting. Actually, come to think of it... I could probably do clouds a lot easier usuing a finger than using a brush, couldn't I?

*gets all distracted*

Hahahha I know that feeling, I pretty much designating fingers (or other parts of my hands, like the side of my palm) for different parts of the picture and I try to keep my left hand clean so I can move the piece later but then again I can pretty much always wipe my hands on my pants : P
I actually tend to use my hands to take away paint/charcoal rather than smudging (which is what you usually do with graphite).

I imagine a good cloud could be made with a finger eraser combo.

Lol true. I know for a lot of stuff I'm supposed to use that 'kneadable erasor', but it gets black way to quick, so I might as well just be using my finger or a tissue or something anyway.
